Paediatric Dentistry Treatment in Sunbury only part of the oral health puzzle

There is nothing like the smiling face of your child to warm your heart. Every parent wants their children to have a beautiful smile. Care for children’s teeth starts early as baby teeth are only in your child’s mouth for a few years. During this time, there is plenty of time for baby teeth to develop cavities and infections. At Smile in Style, early prevention of decay is a major focus of our care and so we provide paediatric dentistry services in our Sunbury and Moonee Ponds locations to keep your children happy and their smile’s healthy.

Care starts early

The best medicine we can give ourselves is prevention. Dental care for children begins as soon as their first teeth erupt, or even sooner. Infants whose teeth have yet to erupt are not completely safe from potential dental problems, as teeth are forming beneath the gums. After feeding, infants’ mouths should be wiped clean with a soft, damp cloth. This way, sugar residue does not remain on the gums, where it can provides food for oral bacteria and the formation of plaque.

Preventive dental care

Children do not develop cavities solely as a result of sugary foods and beverages. Having a good oral hygiene routine at home is vital in order to grow and maintain healthy, happy smiles. It takes time for children to learn proper brushing and flossing skills, so regular visits to the dentist are important to enable us to monitor their oral hygiene routine. We work with our young patients to demonstrate good brushing and flossing techniques, and discuss with them the healthy eating habits that are necessary to avoid cavities. Parents are encouraged to keep a watchful eye over the hygiene habits of their children, between dental visits as children can sometimes rush through their daily brushing/flossing routine, or forget to do it at all.

Nutrition is a factor in oral health

Sugar is commonly viewed as the primary enemy of a healthy smile. Research has shown however, that acidic foods and drinks are just as damaging to tooth structure, leading to the erosion of tooth enamel. There is more to nutrition than just avoiding foods and drinks that can damage teeth. The choices that we make with our food can also help maintain a healthy smile.

Foods that are rich in calcium are good for our teeth as well as our bones. Crunchy vegetables like celery and broccoli are high in vitamins, and also provide cleansing through their rough texture. According to research, cheese offers cavity-fighting benefits in addition to nourishing the body with calcium. Our team at Smile In Style care about our young patients. We see our role as educators to help provide them with an opportunity to learn good oral hygiene habits that will last a lifetime. Contact Smile in Style at our Sunbury 03 8001 6021 or Moonee Ponds 03 8400 4104 practice to schedule a time for your family’s dental care.
