Nutrition and oral health: Tips from Smile in Style, in Moonee Ponds VIC and Sunbury, VIC

Your dietary choices can have a significant impact on your health, and this is especially true of oral health. In fact, food has a dual impact on the mouth. First, everything you eat directly contacts the teeth, gums, and other oral tissues. Additionally, your body needs good nutrition to fight off oral disease, strengthen tooth enamel, and maintain healthy tissues. Below are some of the best foods for oral health.

  • Brazil nuts, sesame seed, and almonds – Seeds and nuts are high in protein, and packed with micronutrients and minerals. These three are especially high in calcium, which helps remineralize teeth.
  • Onions and garlic – They can help fight harmful bacteria in the mouth.
  • Raw, organic, crunchy veggies – Foods such as celery, carrots and apples which are high in fibre can help clean plaque and particles from the surfaces of teeth as you chew. Organic vegetables are higher in nutrients and contain no pesticides.
  • Strawberries and citrus – Many foods are high in Vitamin C, which helps prevent the breakdown of gum tissue. However due to the acidic nature of these and similar fruits they can soften tooth enamel. Be sure to rinse with plain water immediately after consuming. Also, wait about an hour before brushing, so the enamel has time to re-harden.
  • Green tea – This is an excellent source of powerful antioxidants which strengthen the immune system. Unlike black tea or coffee, it is unlikely to stain teeth due to the pale colour.
  • Water – Hydration is important for all aspects of health. Many beverages contain sugar or acid which can damage teeth. Regularly drinking plain water helps rinse harmful residues from your mouth.
