Dental extractions may have a variety of side effects, but learning the process of tooth removal can put many patients at ease.
What is a tooth extraction?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a natural tooth from the bone of the jaw. This may be done for a variety of reasons. A tooth may be diseased due to a large cavity or an infection and cannot be saved with root canal therapy. A tooth may have become dislodged due to trauma and cannot be reattached. Other times, teeth may be removed in preparation of orthodontic care or the placement of full dentures. There are two types of extractions performed at R Dentists, including surgical extraction and simple extraction. Surgical requires the dentist to cut into the gum tissue to access the tooth, while simple extraction uses leverage to wedge an exposed tooth out of the socket. After extraction, many patients consider replacement including dental implants, bridges, or dentures to restore function to their smile.
What are the side effects?
Side effects of tooth extraction include:
- Pain and discomfort
- Swelling
- Bleeding
- Jaw stiffness
Many of these issues can be addressed with medication as well as closely following aftercare instructions. If patients are experiencing extended side effects, far past a few days after the procedure, they are encouraged to book a follow-up appointment with their dentist to discuss their options for treatment.
