FAQ

  • Does bleaching permanently affect or damage the enamel of the tooth?
No, teeth whitening is completely safe. Our whitening treatments use carbamide peroxide, which is the active whitening agent that releases stains from the teeth without softening or weakening the tooth or the tooth structure.
  • Are over-the-counter whitening and bleaching products just as effective?
While there are some bleaching and whitening products available over-the-counter that do whiten, they often do not have the same professional strength as those provided in our office. Additionally, patients that use these over-the-counter whitening kits may experience more sensitivity than normal and, if used improperly, may actually damage their teeth. It is important that patients who use professional grade whitening products use them as per their dentist’s instructions and under the supervision of a professional.
  • Why should I consider porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers can cover and disguise imperfections in a patient’s smile. Veneers are a great way to address teeth that are severely stained and discolored, cracked or chipped, or are misaligned.
  • Why does my jaw pop when I open it?
This popping action may occur due to the jawbone literally “popping” off of the pad that is between the jawbone and the base of the skull. This can happen from time to time and is completely normal; however, if pain or discomfort develops, it is important to seek treatment from a professional.
  • Why does tooth decay happen?
Tooth decay develops when plaque forms on the teeth. This can be caused by sugars and starches in our food, and when left on the tooth’s enamel, will produce an acid that can break down the enamel and weaken the tooth.
  • What can I do for ulcers and canker sores?
Unfortunately, there is really no way to eliminate these, nor is there a way to reduce the frequency in which they occur. However, there are medications that may be prescribed by a dentist that can make you more comfortable when one does appear. On their own, they will usually go away within a week or two.
  • I unconsciously grind my teeth during the night. What can I do to stop?
Teeth can be damaged by grinding and clenching. The enamel on the teeth may wear down, and this can result in pain and discomfort in the jaw and neck, sometimes resulting in headaches. Though typically caused by stress, patients can use bite guards (also known as night guards) to reduce the forces and protect their teeth and the restorations in the dental arches that may be affected.
  • What are the alternative treatments to dentures?
Dentures are not the only way to restore missing teeth. There are alternative treatments such as dental implants and “teeth in a day.” You should speak with Dr. Löberg to see if you are a candidate for alternative restoration options.
  • Can silver fillings affect my health?
Yes, silver amalgam fillings contain mercury, which can release toxins when heated. Several alternative filling materials can be used that are completely safe.
  • What is root canal therapy?
There are situations in which the dental pulp of a tooth is infected and a patient may need to undergo root canal therapy. During this procedure, Dr. Löberg will remove the dental pulp that is infected or diseased. The tooth is then filled and topped with a dental crown for protection. This is the best way to save a natural tooth and eliminate the need for extraction and restoration.
  • When should I have my wisdom teeth removed?
Dr. Löberg will let you know if you need to have your wisdom teeth removed. In most circumstances, it is done during the adolescent years when they are not yet fully formed.
  • Caps versus dental crowns: which one is better?
There is absolutely no difference between the two—they are the same thing, just referred to by different names.
  • Why should baby teeth with decay be addressed?
Although many parents think that baby teeth with decay should be left alone, as they will be falling out to make room for permanent teeth, it is important to address the decay. Baby teeth that are infected can have consequences when the permanent teeth arrive, and it is not recommended to extract baby teeth too early.
  • When will baby teeth fall out?
Around the age of five, children will begin to lose their baby teeth. This may continue until they reach the age of twelve, in which time most of the permanent teeth will have erupted.
  • My child is a thumb-sucker. What could this do to the teeth?
It is important to ensure that children are not sucking their thumb when their permanent teeth are erupting. This is because there may be abnormal bone growth and movement of the teeth that can require orthodontics. It is best to stop the thumb sucking as soon as you can to eliminate future problems with their oral health.
  • My children play sports. Should they wear mouth guards?
Yes. It is always recommended that when children (or adults) are playing sports that they wear mouth guards to prevent dental injuries. It is a preventative method, and no different than wearing a helmet and kneepads for other sports.
  • What do I do about a knocked out tooth?
If it is a baby tooth, do not replace it in the mouth. However, if it is an adult tooth, put it back into the socket and call Dr. Löberg immediately. Time is important when a tooth has been knocked out, and emergency dental care will be needed.
  • What causes periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a result of bacteria. When teeth are not cared for properly, these bacteria can cause inflammation, resulting in gingivitis. This can develop into serious stages of periodontal disease, and the different stages can cause gum tissue loss and bone loss, and can ultimately result in the loss of natural teeth. Maintaining good oral health habits is the key to reducing the risk of developing periodontal disease and/or gingivitis.
  • Can an oral irrigator be a proper substitute for brushing and flossing?
No. It is not recommended that patients replace flossing and brushing with an oral irrigation system. This is because plaque is not removed with these devices, and can lead to periodontal disease if left to progress.
  • What is scaling and root planing?
This procedure is offered in the dental office to stop and reverse periodontal disease. The roots and surface of the teeth are cleaned of plaque and tartar, and it can help address problems associated with the progression of gum disease.
  • Is it okay that my gums bleed when I floss or brush?
No, this is actually a sign of gingivitis. Gums that are irritated and swollen, and bleed during dental care mean that there are plaque and tartar buildups underneath the gums. This can progress into periodontal disease if not treated. Call your dentist if you notice these signs to receive proper care and treatment.
  • How many times a year should I see the dentist?
In most cases, patients will benefit from visiting their dentist twice a year. You can visit more often if you want more frequent teeth cleanings or if your dentist is monitoring a condition and asks you to come in sooner.
  • What is the cause of bad breath?
In most cases, bad breath, also known as halitosis, is caused by poor oral hygiene. When food particles are stuck between teeth, it can cause an odor. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can result in bad breath. Brushing and flossing regularly is the key, and focusing on the cheeks and tongue will help with freshening breath. Mouth rinses might also help. If you are doing these things and you are still experiencing bad breath, it may be time to visit the dentist or consult with your primary care physician about the problem to seek further advice.
