Periodontics
The dentist talks with patients about a condition called periodontitis and explains why they might need comprehensive therapy as part of their treatment plan.
During an examination by Dr. Löberg, the gums are thoroughly evaluated for periodontal disease. Our dental team examines the color and firmness of the gum tissue as well as the space between the teeth and gums. The more advanced the periodontal disease is, the larger the pocket size and depth.
Patients who regularly brush and floss their teeth may still develop periodontitis. This is because plaque can be more difficult to remove in certain areas, especially around the gum line. When left undisturbed, this plaque can harden and become tartar. Tartar is very rough and porous, and can only be removed by a dental professional. It requires specialized instruments to fully remove it and keep it from developing further, becoming more of a problem for the patient.
Periodontitis is serious. Periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease and other health disorders and it can affect the overall health of the body. Once bone is lost around the teeth, it will not return. This is why it is so important to ensure that patients take good care of their teeth, maintain regular dental appointment, and do everything they can to ensure oral health habits are consistent and effective.
Periodontitis starts out as gingivitis. This is the first stage of gum disease, and often known by the appearance of redness and inflammation along the gum line. Patients may also experience bleeding whenever they are brushing and flossing. This is an indication that disease is developing; patients should schedule an appointment with Dr. Löberg to undergo immediate treatment to reverse the condition and maintain good oral health. As it progresses, pockets may form between the teeth and gums, in which plaque and tartar will continue to develop. Bacteria can cause infections, and the bone and gum tissue will begin to disintegrate. Time is essential in treating periodontitis, so the sooner patients can get in for treatment, the better their chances of experiencing remission.
Therapy will consist of comprehensive cleanings and follow-up evaluations. An increase in at-home care will also be required.
