Fraxel™ - Related FAQ's

Q: I have many body moles. May I have them removed by Fraxel laser?

A: If moles are removed, I do that surgically and submit the specimen to the dermatopathology laboratory, so that I am not destroying, partially, a mole without knowing what it's malignant potential is. I don't like to use the Fraxel for this reason.

Q: I have a lot of redness in my face and it embarrasses me terribly. Will Fraxel help this?

A: No, I have not found that Fraxel Restore, Fraxel Dual or Fraxel Repair helps redness. The 595 nm. yellow light V-Beam laser, effectively diminishes the red coloration.

Q: I am interested in having Fraxel but have seen some reports on the internet about pinpoint brown spots or marks. Should I be concerned about this?

A: If you have somewhat olive to dark skin, and are prone to getting dark marks on your body from trauma, such as bumping your legs on furniture, or bumping your arms, or seeing dark spots that come after acne and last for months after the acne bump is gone, then you might be more prone to post laser post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Fortunately it is rare to see this with Fraxel. Theoretically it is more apt to occur with Fraxel Repair than Fraxel Restore, but in the decade of doing Fraxel Restore I have not seen any evidence in my patients of this dotted pigment.

Q: I have sweat gland bumps underneath my lower eyelids. The dermatologist called them syringoma. Can these be treated by Fraxel?

A: No treatment will permanently remove them unless they were surgically excised. Fraxel Restore or Fraxel Repair can improve their appearance and then maintenance treatments may be done later when the bumps start to grow upwards.

Q: Is Fraxel laser better than a radiofrequency skin tightening device like Thermage for acne?

A: No, absolutely not. In fact, I have had better results with multiple Fraxel Restore laser treatments than what I used to achieve with Carbon dioxide laser, and even the new fractional CO2 Fraxel Repair, Dermabrasion and micordermabrasion. Skin tightening devices, such as Thermage, usually target the deep collagen and don't help the dermis reconfigure epidermal scarring.

Q: I am very afraid of pain and my doctor suggested I have Fraxel for my acne scars. I have read there are different Fraxel lasers. Which one would I have and is it more painful than the others?

A: Without examining you, I could not tell you what is best for your skin's condition. Fraxel Repair is a fractional invasive laser and is more painful than the fractional non-ablative Fraxel Restore laser, the latter which only require topical numbing cream for most patients.
