Restylane™ - Related FAQ's

Q: Why do I not need to have Restylane injected as frequently as I did several years ago?

A: The mere action of introducing a needle in the dermis induces an inflammatory reaction which then produces new collagen. The filler, whether Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Perlane, Sculptra and Fat injections, all stimulate the body to make new collagen. This collagen is seen under the microscope on biopsy studies. With repetitive treatments, as the filler is dissolved, there may be a need for less volume eventually of the filler. Usually the volume of new collagen is not enough to replace filler injections, but the duration of effectiveness can increase thereby lessen the frequency of repeat treatments. Some patients return after eight months after their first hyaluronic acid filler (Restylane or Juvederm) for more treatment, but after several treatments, they may not need more for a year, or more.

Q: My sister had a filler, I think Restylane, injected in her smile creases and there's a blue bump that hasn't gone away in a month. Should she see her doctor? What can this be?

A: Restylane and Juvederm, when superficial, can reflect the path of light differently back through the surface of the skin making it look bluish. This Tyndall effect, as the physical property is named, can be lessened by injecting the bump with hyaluronidase and/or extracting the product through a sterile needle puncture or sharp scalpel puncture when done by the doctor. Please don't try this yourself as infection and bleeding could be serious complications should you do it.

Q: Would Restylane cause me to have more acne?

A: Restylane and Juvederm do not cause acne, but can exacerbate current acne if the actual acne lesion is penetrated by the needle during the injection.

Q: Lips do not get more lines after fillers like Restylane wear off, do they?

A: No. Lines that have been injected do not look worse than they did before the fillers were injected, because the skin has been allowed to be smoother for some time and the creases can start to disappear. Furthermore, there is evidence that the body produces more collagen as a response to the injections!

Q: I had Restylane injected in my tear troughs and it helped a lot. Unfortunately, the right side did much better than the left. How can I get rid of a lumpiness from the filler?

A: Hyaluronidase can be injected to reduce the volume of the over correction of the filler.
