Q: I tend to get allergies in the Spring. Would I increase my chances of having lumps from Restylane injections to fill my cheeks?

A: "Hay fever" and other allergies do not seem to be correlated to developing a reaction to hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane. If a lump occurs it may be from overcorrection in one area and this can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Delayed onset granulomas are immune reactions forming lumps months later but this is not an "allergic" reaction and they are very very rare.

Q: I had Sculptra injected for pan facial volume. My lips still look flat. Sculptra wasn't injected there. Why?

A: Both Sculptra and Radiesse are not used in the lips because of lumps that had been seen when they were first developed. Restylane and Juvederm are excellent in the lips.

Q: Do fillers hurt a lot? I want Restylane but am worried about needle pain.

A: No. Numbing cram and gentle manipulation by the doctor can make it a nice experience.

Q: I had Restylane injected in my smile fold by one doctor and it didn't work. I then had Juvederm injected into the same folds and that didn't work, but this was done by a different doctor, both experts in their fields. Recently I tried Radiesse and it made it worse! Why can't I have fillers?

A: Some people have more than smile folds as their cause for the aged appearance of the face. Cheek fat atrophy causes the lower cheek to fall creating a jowl. The mid cheek falls and hangs over the smile fold and makes the fold look deeper. Injecting filler in the fold will not help this appearance much at all. Restructuring the cheek will help better. Volume augmentation and sometimes a facelift can help. Then the residual smile crease can be treated with fillers. There also is an issue with technique in that the placement of the filler is important. However as you've had different physicians treat you it is doubtful that your issue is related to technique.

Q: I want to have Restylane injected but I was given a prescription for my acne breakout. Is this a problem?

A: You should wait until the acne resolves, if it is in the area of proposed filler injections, so that bacteria from the surface won't be introduced with the filler.
