Restylane™ - Related FAQ's

Q: I had Restylane™ injected recently and now my primary care doctor needs me to take a water pill for my blood pressure. Will this interfere with my great result from the Restylane™?

A: The water pill will not eliminate the water bound to the Restylane™ so there is no interference with the Restylane™'s cosmetic effect.

Q: I am considering having Restylane™ injected in my smile creases but I am concerned because someone I know mentioned they have dark spots from the areas where the needles went in. Can this happen to me?

A: I do not see this occur in my practice. Some patients are prone to darkening after trauma, or inflammatory skin episodes such as bouts of eczema, acne or a grease burn, curling iron burn or bump on their arm or leg. The very tiny needles used to inject Restylane™ or Juvederm™ do not cause post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. There can be a dot of blood on the skin after the needle comes out but this should not cause a brown mark. As long as the injector has a gentle hand, proceeds slowly and does not place any Restylane™ or Juvederm™ too superficially as the needle is withdrawn or entered, then there should be no long term bump or discoloration from the hyaluronic acid filler.

Q: I will have Restylane™ injected for my wrinkles but I will also have Fraxel™ Restore resurfacing. How soon after the laser can I have the injections?

A: By one week after Fraxel™ Restore resurfacing you can have Juvederm™ or Restylane™ injected. There is no open wound one day after Fraxel™ but in case you develop an unusual reaction such as a dermatitis to the topical creams or a problem with a cold sore outbreak from the stress of the laser, it is beneficial not give it time to heal before having a filler injected. You don't want to have a filler get infected by injecting in through an open wound.

Q: Can one syringe of Restylane™ fill the tear troughs?

A: I usually distribute the filler equally on both sides as I fill lower and lower down. In this way I am sure I balance the sides in case I run out before finishing the whole length of the smile fold. The patient can then decide if they want to continue filling the lower folds rather than being forced to open a new syringe because one side is markedly filled compared with the other side that wasn't.
