What is Restylane™ and Perlane™?

Restylane™ and Perlane™, which contain Hyaluronic acids, can be used as fillers. Other products such as Juvederm™ Ultra and Juvederm™ Ultra Plus are also fillers, although they are from different companies. Restylane™ and Perlane™ are from the company called Medicis® and Juvederm™ Ultra and Juvederm™ Ultra Plus are from the company called Allergan.

Hyaluronic acids are very different from the collagen that doctors used decades ago. Known as a ground substance, Hyaluronic acids are muco-polysaccharides, which mean they are essentially sugar water. Moreover, muco-polysaccharides act as the cushion of the dermis underneath the epidermis as well. In a majority of the parts in the body and the skin, water is contained and Hyaluronic acid binds with this water, since it is how the acid works. The sugar protein molecule in the Hyaluronic acid binds with the water inside the body and that is why an injected filler plumps the wrinkles in the skin from below.

Restylane™ is a thinner or less viscous product than Perlane™. Hence, Perlane™ is injected slightly more deeply for deeper folds. In some situations, Restylane™ can be used on top of Perlane™. In effect, doctors are now able to inject two different products within the same fold.

Restylane™ and Perlane™ are often used to fill smile creases in patients. However, since Restylane™ is a more superficial product than Perlane™, it is injected into other areas like the upper outer eyebrow, the tear trough (the groove below the skin of the eyelid where it meets the cheek), the lower cheek between the jowls and the chin.

Since Perlane™ is a thicker Hyaluronic based filler than Restylane™, it is often used in the deep temples where atrophy or wasting of the fat is noted. Moreover, Perlane™ is utilized to treat the mid cheek area and the lower cheek as well.
