Root canals and tooth extractions are two types of dental procedures that are often misunderstood. While the myths claim there is pain, the truth is both treatments can relieve pain caused by a toothache. The procedure for a root canal and tooth extraction involves oral surgery, which can be performed by one of our highly skilled dentists at Rose Hill General & Cosmetic Dentistry. Drs. Mark Troilo and Jessica Niederee and our team have the training and expertise to provide gentle and comfortable treatments. We are happy to explain each procedure to provide peace of mind.
The pulp chamber in our teeth is comprised of blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues. When the pulp becomes infected, it eventually dies. Then, the body’s inflammatory responses set in, resulting in a toothache. Left untreated, the infection can affect the bloodstream. Our dentists can typically save the natural tooth during a root canal procedure. For treatment, we numb the affected area and may administer a sedative to provide the utmost comfort. We will remove the damaged portions of the tooth, clean and disinfect it, shape the canal and then fill and seal it. To protect the tooth, we often place a dental crown on top of it. We provide various types of dental crowns from porcelain to metal, to meet unique patient needs.
When "wisdom" teeth emerge from the gum line, the jaw may not have room for them. The teeth can become impacted between the gum tissue and jawbone when they emerge improperly. This can lead to teeth shifting. Symptoms of impacted teeth can include a gum tissue infection surrounding the molars, swelling, and pain. During the procedure, we can provide sedation including nitrous oxide and IV sedation. After treatment, we will provide proper aftercare instructions including foods to eat and avoid during the healing period.
Nitrous oxide, known as "laughing gas," can take the edge off during treatment. The gas is administered through a comfortable nasal mask and the effect kicks in quickly. The effect also wears off quickly, allowing patients to drive home from the appointment. We can also administer medicine through an IV to provide a moderate level of sedation. The effect kicks in quickly and can leave a patient feeling groggy after the procedure. We recommend coordinating transportation to and from the appointment and plenty of rest after arriving home.
